Excellent reference
After visiting three public libraries in my area and realizing I had more books on tropical fish aquariums then all three combined, I started shopping for new, updated books. I have a couple of books that are really good, but this one has become my favorite. As a total beginner, I wanted something easy, yet concise. This book has very complete information that others were missing and it's compact so I can bring it with me to the pet stores and quickly find what I'm looking for, while browsing fish. Highly recommended if you're just starting out. As a personal note, I no longer live in Guam. The libraries I visited were in somewhat rural TN.

A rare and priceless jewel is this...
An amazing set of short stories by debut author Doreen Baingana, "Tropical Fish" quickly drew me in and held me captive until the very last page of the last tale in a series of stories on the lives and development of three Ugandan sisters. Largely focused on the youngest, Christine Mugisha, these stories take us into life as young women in a society full of such promise but decimated in many ways by missteps such as the regime of Idi Amin.Christine Mugisha and her eldest sister Rosa and the middle child Patti are drawn in strong contrasts, as well as powerful parallels. They are all young women trying to find their way in society with a shared family history. However, each has clutched a different talisman as their saving grace. Rosa seeks comfort and support in a group of friends and in the arms of a young man with whom she has a secret relationship. Patti chooses God as she immerses herself in the society of born-again Christians. Christine searches in many places...

Gorgeous and Brilliant
This time next week, I'll be in Kampala, Uganda giving a five-day workshop to the amazing women of an organization called FEMRITE. I am so stoked about the opportunity. Right now, I am preparing a packet of short stories to use as texts. Obviously, I went right to Tropical Fish.I'd read Tropical Fish before, but I had forgotten just how brilliant Doreen is! I am forcing myself to choose only two stories for my packet, but I can't begin to choose. I love me some coming of age stories and her young narrators are aces. I know I'll end up using one of the epistolary stories because writing a letter that seems like a letter, but still tells a story is a complicated maneuver-- which Doreen pulls off not once, but twice in the collection. So, here are the stories I am thinking of using and a little bit of summary.*"A Thank You Note" This story is a letter from Rosa who is in the final stages of HIV to her lover, David. The letter is both personal and real,...

Excellent!!
I absolutely loved this hilarious book because I could identify with some of the characters- The setting is not in a village, the stories are not about nice respectable African girls like we sometimes want the world to believe. Ms. Baingana weaves a story of three African girls growing up in urban Uganda struggling with everyday adolescent issues and College life. She also gives a very clear picture of life of an African immigrant and problems faced in trying to fit in upon return. Very good pick for a book club and rather than borrow from a library, buy one for home library.

Product Description

In her fiction debut, Doreen Baingana follows a Ugandan girl as she navigates the uncertain terrain of adolescence. Set mostly in pastoral Entebbe with stops in the cities Kampala and Los Angeles, Tropical Fish depicts the reality of life for Christine Mugisha and her family after Idi Amin’s dictatorship.

Three of the eight chapters are told from the point of view of Christine’s two older sisters, Patti, a born-again Christian who finds herself starving at her boarding school, and Rosa, a free spirit who tries to “magically” seduce one of her teachers. But the star of Tropical Fish is Christine, whom we accompany from her first wobbly steps in high heels, to her encounters with the first-world conveniences and alienation of America, to her return home to Uganda.

As the Mugishas cope with Uganda’s collapsing infrastructure, they also contend with the universal themes of family cohesion, sex and relationships, disease, betrayal, and spirituality. Anyone dipping into Baingana’s incandescent, widely acclaimed novel will enjoy their immersion in the world of this talented newcomer.

Neat!
I actually got these because I had an idea for a new shower curtain. Bear with me - this actually has a point. I saw this shower curtain in a magazine that was see through with pockets in it. You put toys or flowers or whatever in the pockets to make your own design. It came in various colors. Problem: They wanted $75 for it (pocket stuffing not included)! Sooooo - I made my own out of blue-green material and decided to get these fish to put in the pockets. Viola! Fish swimming in the ocean! As far as these fish go - they are well made, good quality plastic. I'm sure if they were being used for toys they would be excellent not only as just a toy, but as a learning tool so the kids could learn about various sea creatures, how they live, etc. I would recommend this as a toy for an older child, say above three or four, since the size of the fish is about 2.5 inches and could be accidentally swallowed (with some effort, but I've raised a few kids - believe me they make the effort)...

Essential reef guide for the Asian Pacific region.
This is an outstanding fish ID manual for the Pacific and Indian ocean region. It beats out others books of a similar nature with the number of photos (6 on every page for a total of over 2,500 pics) and the helpful identification notes below each pic along with the average size of the fish, localised habitat(if any)and pictures of the juvenile fish alongside the adult as well distinguishing feature between male and female forms and arrows pointing to distinguishing marks between similar fish of the same species. Fish are easily found from a photo you took or memory, as it places them into 20 identification groups according to body shape. The pictures are not quite the same quality as The Asia Pacific Reef Guide by Helmut Debelius but they are good enough. Unlike most books of this type it is fish specific so does not include any pics of molluscs, crustaceans, cephalopods, nudibranches, corals or other denizens of the ocean. You have to go to his Reef Creatures ID book for that in...

One of the best out there!
This book revolutionised fish ID in the tropical South Pacific when it first came out. We live and work in Fiji in the marine environment and have 4 of these on our shelf (for use of staff in the field as well as office)The only drawback we find is the bizarre choice of common names. There are already a plethora of other books out there with common names fairly well established in Fiji by Lieske&Meyers. Seems to follow more of an Australian theme for these than the prevous Paul Humman books which use the American common names. But overal a MUST for any diver who visits the Tropical Pacific. If you use it in conjunction with Lieske&Meyers then if you don;t find the fish you're looking at, prepare to be published!

Good enough but fraught with errors
This is an OK book for one which seeks only to cover the "basic" species of tropical fish. But the editor ought to hang their head in shame. The index is fraught with errors! Page numbers given for a particular species do not match what pages they are actually on to a large extent, especially with the tetras. In another place, the captions underneath a group of photos of swordtails read rainbow fish! It seems as though this book was sort of put together a bit too quickly for a thorough, ordinary review. That said, looking past the errors, this is an OK book, as I've said, and very much in the same idiom as the companion volume on plants by the same company. I use my copy of this work as a backup to my "A to Z" book. Basically to corroborate what it says and vice versa. Nothing like having two sources opinions on a given species.

This is a good book for beginners
There is lots of content in this little book. I believe it is best suited to a new hobbyist as he/she walks through an aquarium shop looking at their stock. An experienced hobbyist usually knows what they like and how they will behave. Just the same, the book can produce a few surprises. For example, I was reading about Ram Dwarf Cichlids, an old favorite of mine, but soon found myself drawn to the Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlid, a fish with many of the same characteristics but much more colorful (and expensive!). I'll try them someday, and this was the book that pointed them out to me.

Good quick reference guide
This book is good as far as a quick look-up guide for common tropical fish. It suggests what size tank the fish needs and how they should be kept (in schools, in pairs), and tells the fish's temperament and food needs. It has examples of "model" tanks for 10 g, 20 g, etc, that are proven to be harmonious according to the book. It also has a section of tropical fish to advoid. One aspect the book is missing are the water parameters (soft water, hard water, temperature) necessary for the fish, which is extremely important when choosing what fish to keep, and what fish can be kept together. I suggest purchasing this book used; it's not worth it's full retail price.

Excellent for the overwhelmed beginner!
Many books on this topic are as confusing as the vast range of fish supplies in the pet stores. As a first-time betta owner, I thought my fish was just aging till a slightly more knowledgeable friend told me that "gray" means "illness," and not "old age." The chapter on fish health was very helpful and now it looks like we may get the full life-span out of him. Information in this excellent book is easy to find, well-organized, straightforward, and is just enough to bring you to a level of competency without information-overload. If you're just starting out with an aquarium or trying to decide if you want one, this book is all you need! Save the more intensive books for when you're sure this is a hobby you really want to invest in for the long term.

Very Enjoyable!
This book was well organized and provided lots of information on the Goldfish, Koi, freshwater and saltwater aquariums. This is a good book for beginners and experts alike. I have read it cover to cover and will refer back to if often as I become more interested in my new hobby.A bit lite on acutal fish information, but an excellent source on all basic information about setting up different types of aquariums

A very infromitive book, though not for the expert.
I picked up this book, because my skills as an aquarist were getting a bit rusty, and I must admit, it is a fine book for any newbie, and even for the intermediate level aquarist, however, if you are a pro, you may be a bit disappointed in this book, as it offers little to no help for the advanced aquarium. But, unless you are a professional, I highly recommend this book.It has everything you would ever need to know to start your own small community tank, build, stock, and maintain your own water garden, and even has some information about salt-water tanks, although, I must say, not nearly what you need to know before undertaking the salt-water hobby. The book is also fun to read, the author keeps the book interesting from the first page, all the way to the back of the book, which is something that I believe is very good, because a lot of fish books out there will put you to sleep... (and some are also very long-winded, with very little info, not the...
